Swaddling May Reduce Risk of SIDS
Source: The Journal of Pediatrics 2002; 141: 398-404
New research shows that swaddling, or wrapping babies snug in blanket, can reduce the risk of SIDS by keeping babies safely on their backs. According to a new study published in the Journal of Pediatrics, almost all of the infants involved in the study, including those that normally were able to fall asleep on their stomachs, were able to fall asleep safely on their backs when swaddled. Infants who sleep on their backs are less likely to die of SIDS.
Younger babies were more receptive to the swaddle, which suggests that "early introduction of swaddling may ensure greater success", according to researchers.
Researchers also note that cultures that practice swaddling, with infants normally sleeping on their backs, have a lower incidence of SIDS.
