Clinical Sleep Studies

The SoundSleep for Babies CD™ (formerly known as the BabySLEEP System) music concept was first tested on a selected sampling of babies in home environments throughout the United States over a two-year period.

Of those babies who were exposed extensively to the SoundSleep for Babies CD, the vast majority responded positively by falling asleep more quickly (often immediately). The caregivers and parents who supervised the infants indicated that the babies slept longer (even through the night) than without the use of the Sound Sleep for Babies CD.

In late 2002, the Sound Sleep for Babies CD (then known as the Baby Sleep System CD) was brought to Devonshire Pre-School in Chatsworth, CA. A sound system was installed in the room specific to infants under 1 years old, and the Sound Sleep for Babies CD was played on continual repeat. There, nearly all of the infants exhibited a calmer, more relaxed personality, even while they were awake and playing.

During afternoon nap time, most of the infants fell asleep faster and stayed asleep up to an hour longer, even reducing the need to rock the babies, as was necessary prior to the CD exposure.

The system was then moved to the other rooms specific to babies and toddlers up to 5 years old. The results were the same. The children exhibited a more relaxed overall demeanor, and were able to sleep better, faster, and longer.

In October of 2003, William Lenihan and Jay Oliver were invited to speak at a workshop at the national PACE conference in Anaheim, CA. (Professional Association for Childhood Education). The PACE organization is dedicated to "advancing the profession of childhood educators", and focuses mainly on Child Care Center Owners, Directors, and Administrators.

The directors of the PACE organization (some of whom have newborns themselves,) have endorsed the Sound Sleep for Babies CD as a safe, effective method to help babies sleep and promote a better environment for both the baby and the caregiver(s).

Noboru Kobayashi, M.D, the director of Child Research Net cites a study conducted 30 years ago in the United States, where they recorded the heartbeats of healthy mothers and played it for babies in the nursery. The studies concluded that babies who heard the heartbeat recording cried less and slept better. Furthermore, when compared with babies who did not hear the recording, they also showed better weight development.

Studies conducted by the late Dr. Lee Salk, eminent Child and Family authority, showed that playing a heartbeat sound recorded from the chest and set to a metronome speed of 72 BPM had various positive effects on newborn babies. The babies gained weight at a faster rate, and they were found to breathe deeper and more regularly when compared to babies who were not exposed to the heartbeat sound. Salk also noted heart rates played at more than 90 BPM resulted in increased excitability and agitation among those babies. A mother's heart rate can exceed 120 BPM during moments of physical stress.
